My Favorite Things: Granta

I'd been asking for a subscription to this venerable magazine for ages, so I was absolutely thrilled this Spring when it showed up in my mailbox - it took a bit of sleuthing to figure out I had my dear friend Elizabeth to thank for a year of Granta coming to me.

Since it's start in the late 1800's Granta has managed to discover some of the brightest stars who later became well known - A.A. Milne and Sylvia Plath were first published in Granta. Since then they get regular contributions from known and unknown writers alike.

It's not just stories, they also feature beautiful photography, poems, paintings and even these drawings by Dave Eggers. It's kind of a random mishmash of wonderfulness, I think of it as The Believer for grownups.

I get so excited when I get a new issue in the mail and it's the perfect thing for me right now with school, I can just read a little story before bed without committing to a whole book.

Oh this is amazing! I was just telling my hubby that I would really love a good magazine/publication subscription, but that I want it to be a really good one as my time is so limited. This sounds divine!

(any other recommendations?)

Marianne, I've heard if you like Granta you'll like The Paris Revue, that's next on my list :)

Thanks! I'll have to start with Granta I suppose....unless I should get the Paris Revue, and then we could mail each other the other once we're done reading....

I remember you wishing for this, but that was all I knew about it. Looks like a perfect publication for you!

I've never heard of this. It sounds intriguing. I love "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath and have been meaning to reread it since we read it as a class in high school.

I feel a little bit lame because I've never heard of this... but it looks super beautiful and VERY tempting.

Love these books, Sarah. I pick them up second hand. Amazing stories. I remember one about a teenaged girl who was supposed to cat sit, but instead she just watched the cats starve everyday from outside the windows. I think the story ended without resolution. I'm a dog lover myself, but that was some hardcore short story writing.
